Victoria Memorial

Historical Significance

Opened to the public on December 28, 1921, the Victoria Memorial stands as a symbol of British imperial grandeur. It houses artifacts, sculptures, and manuscripts reflecting the British Empire's influence in India, preserving the legacy of Queen Victoria and British rule.

Symbolism Behind Victoria Memorial

Conceived by Lord Curzon as a tribute to Queen Victoria, the Victoria Memorial was funded by contributions from across India. The foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales (later King George V) on January 4, 1906, symbolizing India's connection to British rule.

Architecture

The Victoria Memorial, set amidst 64 acres of lush gardens in Kolkata, is a striking white marble structure. Its architecture blends British civic classicism with Eastern influences, designed by British architect William Emerson. The grand domes and colonnades exude elegance, with a bronze Angel of Victory atop the central dome. The marble, sourced from Rajasthan’s Makrana quarries, is the same used for the Taj Mahal.
